As the stolen Camaro raced down the road, Deputy Kyle Doolen followed in hot pursuit nearing speeds of 110 mph.
Earlier in the evening of July 7th two teenage boys and a 13 year old girl stole the car in Ohio, committed burglary where multiple firearms were stolen and attempted to rob a convenience store in Indiana. After the failed robbery the kids headed toward Illinois when they swerved to hit a patrol officer on the side of the road, they were pulled over and tried to shoot the officer, however, the gun misfired and the Camaro escaped.
Shortly after Deputy Doolen received the call and went after the vehicle, during the highway chase the Camaro lower its convertible top and one of the boys fired at Deputy Doolen's car hitting it five times. With lead shrapnel imbedding in Deputy Doolen's arm he continued his pursuit. Eventually the Camaro crashed and the suspects escaped on foot. Within a few hours all three were captured.
In recognition for his brave actions on July 7th, Deputy Doolen received the Medal of Valor award, as well as the Sheriff Deputy of the Year award. Through the course of his career Deputy Doolen has also received the "Tree of Life Award" in 2007 and has completed multiple training courses.
