Police Officer
Miami-Dade Police Department
Miami, FL
On March 2, 2008, Officer Roberto Gonzalez responded to a potential burglary in the warehouse district of Miami, Florida. Six shots were fired, but only two bullets hit Officer Gonzalez, one in his abdomen and the other in his foot. Roberto was airlifted to the local hospital and the suspect was taken into custody by other police officers and charged with three criminal offenses. Officer Gonzalez was in the hospital for about a month. He returned to active duty about six months after the incident and is currently working with the neighborhood response unit. For his participation in this incident, Officer Gonzalez received the Gold Medal of Valor, the Purple Heart and Officer of the Month for April 2008 from the Miami-Dade Police Department.
