On May 7, 2008, Glen Powell, whose wife had recently filed for divorce, entered the St Pete Judicial Building in St Petersburg, FL where Deputy Sheriff B.J. Lyons and his partner were assigned to the security checkpoint. Powell came in toting a backpack and a fanny pack around his waist. He pulled out a gun and fired at Deputy Sheriff Lyons, the first shot missed his head and the second hit his shoulder. Deputy Lyons and his partner then open fired on Powell killing him. In the gunman's backpack a gas mask, a machete, nearly 100 rounds of ammo, two fully loaded magazines and a speed loader for those magazines were found. Both officers agree it was their effort and training combined that gave the incident a quick resolution. Deputy Sheriff B.J. Lyons worked as a Patrol Officer in Springfield, Ohio for 10 years before coming to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office where he has worked vice and narcotics, SWAT and traffic homicide. Deputy Lyons has received the Officer of the Year award and will soon be receiving the Purple Heart and is a candidate for the Medal of Honor. B.J. retired from the Sheriff's Office in the beginning of February, 2009.
