In April 2008 Lieutenant Raymond Garcia and his partner were working at a local movie theater never imagining that it would almost cost them their lives. Around 10 pm the manager walked up and said that they had an unruly person in the lobby. As they approached the man they could immediately see that he was upset, yelling something about a refund. Lieutenant Garcia asked the man to calm down and told him they would have to do a quick pat down. The man refused and quickly pulled a gun from his pants and shot at Lieutenant Garcia's partner's head, he missed but hit Lieutenant Garcia in the face shattering his upper jaw.
The shot knocked him to the ground but he was able to get up just in time to see his partner get shot twice. Despite their critical injuries both officers chased the man outside, where they engaged him in a gun battle within feet of one another. The man was fatally wounded in the exchange. Fearing that his friends would come out and more violence would ensue they held their ground and waited for back up. Lieutenant Garcia has been nominated for The South bay Police and Fire Foundation Medal of Valor award for his extreme bravery.
