Sergeant Shawn Kilgore attended the police academy in 1995, started working as police officer Ocean City Police Department in the summer of 1997 and in August of the same year started working for the Sykesville Police Department, where he still currently works. Some of his day-to-day responsibilities include overseeing operations, managing personnel and handling calls for service. Sergeant Kilgore experienced the camaraderie of law enforcement and saw what it can accomplish when he assisted with an armed robbery in progress in 2004; he received a letter of commendation from the Maryland State Police for "his critical role in assisting in the capture of three armed suspects" and was awarded the "Maryland State Police Superintendent's Salute". He is a board member for the Maryland Chiefs of Police Association Traffic Safety Committee and is directly involved in developing initiatives and programs. As the representative for his department for the Mid Western Region Traffic Safety Coalition, which covers Carroll and Frederick Counties, he is involved with the RAAM program, which reduces alcohol availability to minors. In May, 2008, he graduated from the School of Police Staff and Command through Northwestern University, a preparatory school for police executives and was elected by his peers to the "distinguished position of Co-Activities Director". During his time at Sykesville Police Department, he has served as the police liaison for 6 years for the police auxiliary and still actively mentors volunteers seeking a career in law enforcement. His supervisor refers to his character as "extremely dedicated to his profession and to his community".
