West Tuckerton Volunteer Fire Company
Little Egg Harbor, NJ
Rob Shahinian works full-time as an auto-mechanic an hour and half drive from his home, but he has always spent his little free time volunteering as a firefighter and member of a rescue dive team.
Rob decided he wanted to do the most he could to help his community, and he started volunteer work in 1999 after completing
When responding to an 18 month-old baby's fall from a bed, Rob fashioned a small backboard to secure the baby's neck and spine by using towels, straps, and a KED, which is a smaller board used to treat car crash victims who are sitting up.
When the ER doctor saw Rob's work he said he was impressed by his quick-thinking.
Rob later decided to pursue volunteer firefighting, and after graduating from the Monmouth County Fire Academy fire academy he joined the Jackson No. 1 Fire Company in 2000.
Four years later, Rob and his wife, who is also an All-Star nominee, relocated to Egg Harbor, NJ and he immediately joined the local fire department, West Tuckerton Volunteer Fire Company.
The very first fire he fought with them was a major building fire in which he remained on the ladder for over five hours to help douse the flames.
Two years ago, Rob decided to help more by training and joining the company's dive team, and he is now also certified to assist in scuba search missions.
In 2009, Rob responded to a boating accident and he helped rescue the two victims by swimming out to them, assessing their injuries, and then leading them back to the rescue boat.
Rob looks forward to continuing to volunteer to help his community, and in January he was made assistant Fire Chief.
