During late afternoon on February 27, 2010 Lieutenant John Lambert was dispatched to an accident where a driver had crashed into the concrete wall on an icy highway ramp. As Lieutenant Lambert assisted the motorist another driver lost control of his car and crashed into the police cruiser, the other vehicle and then began sliding sideways at 35 mph toward Lieutenant Lambert and the other driver. Lieutenant Lambert reacted quickly pushing the other driver to safety but he was unable to escape the path of an out-of-control vehicle. Lieutenant Lambert sustained severe injuries to his head and pelvis that so far have kept him from returning to work but he is planning to return to duty once he completes physical therapy. His alertness and instant reaction saved the life of a young man that day and he will be honored on March 23, 2011, with the Police Officer of the Year Award presented by the Parma Elks Lodge.
Lieutenant Lambert has also been nominated to receive a Life Saving Award and Police Heart Award by the Brooklyn Heights Police Department. Police Chief Joseph Kocab described Lieutenant John Lambert as a model public safety officer and a hero.
He also says Lieutenant Lambert's actions are an example of his unselfish character, thinking first of the welfare of a citizen in danger before thinking of himself.
