In November 2010, a mother and her two daughters were driving through their neighborhood when they were pulled over by what appeared to be an un-marked police car.
Three men approached the family's car claiming that their vehicle had been reported as part of a crime scene.
Sofi, the young mother who had never been in trouble with the law, says that it was not long before she realized something was wrong. They were pointing a gun in my daughter's face and she was screaming, "I was afraid for our lives," said Sofi. After the three men forced Sofi and her oldest daughter to hand over their purses, money, and cell-phones; she realized that they were not police officers, but robbers impersonating police. "I sped off and called the police as soon as we got home."
For several nights after the incident, Sofi's five-year-old daughter was still afraid and would not stop repeating what the robbers said to her, "Put your hands up!"
Although Sofi and her oldest daughter had reported the incident to the police and were attempting to move forward, her youngest child remained sleepless and terrified of policemen.
When Detective Victor Carrasquillo found out about the family's traumatic experience, he decided to call Sofi in to speak with a sketch artist.
Thanks to Detective Carrasquillo's hard work and Sofi's ability to remember the tattoos of the robbers, they were captured shortly after. However, Sofi's five year old daughter was still suffering emotionally from the incident.
"She was afraid of cops; the only impression she had of us was a negative one," Said Victor, who personally went to the family's home and spent time with Sofi's youngest daughter. "I wanted to teach her that Policemen are good people," Says Detective Carrasquillo, "we only want to help and to protect her....."
According to his supervisor, Victor is "trustworthy and compassionate; always going above and beyond when it comes to integrity."
After a few conversations with Victor, the young girl's attitude began to change; she even started telling her peers about her new police friend!
Detective Victor Carrasquillo says "This is something that could have happened to anyone, but I wanted to help show Sofi and her family that there is a light at the end of the tunnel."
