Gonzales Arrested After Multi-Agency Investigation

Cops in Bexar County identified and arrested Mark Anthony Gonzales for the murder of Sgt. Kenneth Vann. He is facing a charge of capital murder.

The Bexar County SWAT team, alongside the FBI SWAT team, arrested Gonzales in his double-wide trailer home June 5, 2011 without incident.  Cops say that after Gonzales confided in a friend about shooting Sgt. Vann, that friend came forward to police.

In a news conference held Monday, June 6, 2011, Sheriff Amadeo Ortiz said Gonzales had been drinking all day leading up to the shooting and he had been taking medication for depression. Sheriff Ortiz also revealed that Gonzales had applied a few years back at the San Antonio Police Department, but the list he was on expired.

Cops recovered a Smith and Wesson M & P 15 .223-caliber from Gonzales' home during the arrest. Ballistics results released on June 7, 2011, confirm that this weapon was the one used to shoot Sgt. Vann. Police say they seized nearly 2,000 rounds of .223-caliber ammunition at the time of arrest.  They say most of the ammunition was loaded into magazines or clips and was ready to be used.

"The arrest is bittersweet," said Chief Deputy Ronald Bennett of the Bexar County Sheriff's Office. Sgt. Vann was a 25-year-veteran of the force.  Gonzales is currently in jail on $1.5 million bond.

Now that Gonzales is in custody, Chief Deputy Bennett said the one question he needs answered is, "Why?"
