Investigators in Gainesville, Florida, have never gotten over the horrific discovery they made on August 20, 2003. That morning, they found the body of an infant floating face-down in a shallow pond on a former catfish farm.
The tiny body was badly decomposed -- so much that medical examiners couldn't determine the child's race. But they did determine that the young victim was a female -- and might have only been four weeks old when she died. There were no broken bones or visible signs of injury.
Alachua County Sheriff's detectives believe the baby was dumped in the pond, but their investigation into who might have done it has come up empty. Investigators have even taken DNA samples from hundreds of people in the county and neighboring areas -- all to no avail.
Local residents and businesses joined together, donating time, money and services to give the tragic infant a proper funeral. Detectives have nicknamed their young victim "Baby Jane," but have vowed to uncover her true identity.
