"Safe Havens" For Newborns Of Distressed Mothers

11/18/2004

Newborn abandonment is a cruel and tough reality to face. Sadly, the number of parents abandoning their newborns is growing. The United States is now tackling the problem by taking a different approach to the issue. Rather than cracking down on parents who abandon their children, virtually every state has passed a Safe Haven law. The laws encourage pregnant women to leave their newborns at specific locations rather than discarding them or leaving them to die.  Forty-six states have set up Safe Havens in locations such as firehouses, churches, or hospitals.

Expectant mothers can leave their newborns at Safe Havens -- no questions asked.  If you know of anyone dealing with the difficulties of an unwanted pregnancy, call the crisis hotline at 1-877-796-H-O-P-E. They have operators standing by to help in making decisions regarding the outcome of these types of pregnancies.
