When a 13-year-old Hayfield, Minn., girl's school bus became continually late to drop her off in 2001, the teen's mother became suspicious. Those motherly instincts were right on the mark. That's because according to police, her daughter's school bus driver, 57-year-old Oscar Trevino had included one more stop on his route -- a secluded location where he allegedly raped and molested the young girl.
»The Full Story
A number of times in early 2001, a Hayfield, Minn. mother wondered why her 13-year-old daughter, "Terry," was late coming home from school. It seemed odd to her that the school bus was constantly late -- so Terry's mother called the school one day to find out what was going on. The school assured her the bus would arrive soon, and to be patient.
At the same time, Terry became quiet and withdrawn, especially around adults. Terry's mother, however, figured it was just a phase, and pushed it to the back of her mind.
But in April 2001, Terry's mother received news that brought all of the odd occurences to the forefront of her mind -- and suddenly, everything made sense.
Terry had confided in one of her friends that she was being abused by 57-year-old Oscar Trevino -- her school bus driver.
When Terry's friend realized something was terribly wrong with the situation, she urged Terry to come forward and tell an adult.
When Terry's family found out, they called the police -- and soon, all of the sick details about Trevino's alleged manipulation and abuse came to light.
Cops say Trevino had methodically altered his bus route to make Terry's stop his last. But instead of taking her home, police say he would drive the bus to a secluded road where he would fondle, kiss, and eventually have sex with Terry. Then, as if nothing had happened, cops say he would drop her off in front of her home.
According to police, Trevino had convinced Terry that not only was he her "boyfriend," but that if she told anyone, he would hurt her family. The young teen was conflicted and confused -- Trevino had successfully manipulated his way into her life.
Cops charged Trevino with two counts of First-Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct, and two counts of Second-Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct. But when it came time for trial, Terry found herself too emotionally distraught to testify. Cops say they reached a plea bargain in the case, and the courts decided to put Trevino on probation. He would receive no jail time for his alleged crimes.
Terry had been brave enough to talk about her story -- but cops say that in typical sex offender fashion, Oscar Trevino was too cowardly to face what he'd been accused of doing. Cops say Trevino violated his probation and simply left the area -- and he hasn't been seen since.
