Police tell AMW Michael Edward McAfee was serving a 10-year prison sentence for grand theft at the South Dakota State Penitentiary in Sioux Falls in 1999; it was his seventh felony conviction.
In prison, McAfee was a trustee, and was responsible for maintaining vehicles belonging to the state of South Dakota.
On May 18, 1999, cops say McAfee simply hopped in a prison van from the motor pool and drove off; that vehicle was later recovered in Omaha, Neb.
A federal warrant was issued for McAfee's arrest in August 2000, but so far, he has managed to elude police.
