AMW Capture #795

8 year run ends just days after AMW profile

A man who had been on the run since 1996 was taken into custody on Tuesday, May 18, 2004 in Charleston, West Virginia.  Carl Djusberg was profiled on the hit Fox television program America's Most Wanted on May 15, 2004. Police say his capture is a direct result of appearance on the program.  Djusberg becomes capture number 795 for the show.

Detective Braziel of the Eugene Police Department says just minutes after the segment aired on America's Most Wanted, the phones started ringing. Several tips placed Djusberg in Cleveland, Ohio.   Detective Braziel reached out to the FBI in Cleveland and they surrounded the house where Djusberg was believed to be staying.   When the FBI arrived, Djusberg was gone, but the bed sheets were still warm.  A friend with whom he was living, said Djusberg was watching America's Most Wanted on Saturday night and saw his picture. He immediately asked his friend to help him split town.  The friend told police that she drove Djsuberg to Charleston, West Virginia.

Police in Charleston, feared Djusberg might have hopped on a bus and left town. But they weren't sure, so on Monday morning police and FBI scoured the city handing out posters of Djusberg. Police say at 2:00 p.m. an officer spotted Djusberg on the west side of the city on Rebecca Street, but didn't know he was wanted.  Later, when the information was disseminated among the Charleston police department, the officer realized who she saw.  Police and FBI agents began searching the streets and developed information that Djusberg was hiding out in a local apartment complex.  Police say when they searched the apartment, they found Djusberg and another person hiding in an up stairs bedroom.  Djusberg was taken into custody by the Charleston Police and the FBI shortly after midnight.   Police say he refused to give his name, so they ran his figure prints through the FBI database to confirm his identity.
