David Tarloff has been charged with second-degree murder, second-degree attempted murder and first-degree assault in the vicious meat cleaver murder of New York psychologist Kathryn Faughey. Authorities say Tarloff has been in and out of mental hospitals and was recommended to be institutionalized as far back as 1991. Reports claim he was released from institutions three times in the last eight months. A New York judge must now determine whether Tarloff is fit to stand trial.

On Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2008, police say Dr. Kathryn Faughey met with a patient at around 8 p.m. in her office on New York's Upper East Side. What police say the victim didn't know was that her client was carrying two knives, a meat cleaver and switch blade. Those weapons, they say, are what the suspect would use to hack Kathryn to death.
The doorman heard the screams and called 9-1-1 to report the fracas. When police arrived, Kathryn was pronounced dead at the scene. Her papers were strewn about the office, and cops say there was blood everywhere. The blinds had been ripped from the window, indicating that there had been an intense struggle.
A second victim was also injured when he heard the screams next door to his office and ran to Kathryn's aid. When he did, the maniac came at him with a knife. He was slashed about the face and neck and remains in critical condition, but is expected to survive.
The attack has caused quite a stir among the building's residents. Witnesses say they saw Kathryn's body wheeled out in a stretcher covered with a white sheet, but they could see the blood seeping through. Police are questioning all those who were there when the crime occurred, and those who may have seen the suspect running away.
Luckily, several surveillance cameras did catch the suspect from several angles as he fled the building. The suspect was in such a rush that he left behind a roller suitcase filled with adult diapers and women's clothing, and a smaller second bag containing eight knives, rope and duct tape that were not apparently used in the attack.

David Tarloff was arrested after investigators said they matched his palm prints with those at the bloody Manhattan office where therapist Kathryn Faughey was killed. Police said he told investigators he had set out to rob a psychiatrist he said had institutionalized him 17 years ago but ended up in Faughey's office.
