Cops say Flye suffered injuries to his back and now has a scar on his forehead after jumping down the stairs of the courthouse.
Cops throughout the Northeast are pulling out all the stops to try and track down an accused child rapist -- who is also accused of brutally assaulting an elderly disabled woman.
Anthony Flye has proven to be a tough man to incarcerate. On March 26, 2008, cops were transporting him to a courtroom so he could be arraigned on charges of viciously raping a teenage relative and assaulting a 60-year-old woman. Cops say while Flye was handcuffed and walking to court, he tried jumping head first from a stairwell, almost a story high. His goal: to gain freedom without facing justice. Flye suffered a back injury and a cut on his forehead, but didn't get away.
Cops took him to St. Luke's Hospital to be treated for his injuries. That's when authorities say he pulled another disappearing act. A court officer unshackled Flye's hands and feet so that he could go to the bathroom and make a phone call. While in the bathroom, cops say, Flye slipped out a second door in an adjoining hospital room.
By 3 p.m., cops say Flye managed to get away through a second door in an adjoining room. He fled wearing a green hospital gown, slippers, and jeans.
Anthony Flye has been arrested several times in the past and cops say he uses several aliases. His charges range from assault and battery with a dangerous weapon to carjacking. He was being held on $500,000 bail on the current rape charges.
Since Flye's disappearance, he was spotted twice in downtown New Bedford, but each time, the slippery fugitive has managed to evade capture.
Flye has homes in Swansea and Nantucket, and police say he has connections to Wareham, Martha's Vineyard, Rhode Island, and Maine. They hope to track him down quickly.
On the afternoon of Monday, April 7, 2008, Massachusetts State Police officers had the found the fugitive they'd been hunting for nearly two weeks.
Officers tell AMW that around 2:15 p.m., escapee Anthony Flye was spotted on the side of the road on Route 6 in Westport, Conn. They say Flye was trying to hitch a ride; it was unclear where he was headed. State Police say he was picked up without incident.
Flye is currently being held in lieu of $1 million bail.
