It was just before dawn on August 2, 2008 when Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy Juan Escalante was headed to work at L.A.'s Men's Central Jail. Gunshots rang out, and Escalante became the latest victim of warring gangs in the Cypress Park neighborhood.
