Deputy Burt Lopez was shot to death by a domestic violence suspect who resisted arrested and pulled a concealed handgun. His partner, Deputy Warren "Skip" York, was also killed in the gun battle.

Deputy Lopez served 20 years in the Air Force and retired as a Master Sergeant. He served six years with the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office. He enjoyed lifting weights and played on several sports teams while in the Air Force. Deputy Lopez also enjoyed watching football and baseball.

Deputy Lopez's wife, Michelle, said he was very focused on his family and loved to spend time with their five children and 4-year-old grandson.

He had a passion for reading and aspired to write short stories and poetry after retirement.

Deputy Lopez was a dedicated son to his parents and his family remembers his great sense of humor and the jokes he loved to play.
