Served 2 years

Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office
Okaloosa County, Fla.

Survivors:

On April 25, 2009, Deputy York and his partner, Deputy Burt Lopez, approached a domestic violence suspect who resisted arrest and pulled a concealed handgun. Deputy Lopez was fatally shot. When the suspect jumped in his truck and attempted to flee, Deputy York jumped in the passenger side of the truck to stop him and was also shot and killed.

Deputy York served two years with the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office. He also served twenty years in the Air Force and retired as a Master Sergeant.

Deputy York loved to spend time with his wife Janel and 10-year-old son, Michael. The three took many vacations to Disney World and SeaWorld, in addition to other places around the country. On their last trip to SeaWorld in February of 2009, Deputy York took his son cage shark diving.

Deputy York and his son loved to work on projects together. The latest project was building a rocket ship. Since Michael was getting older, Deputy York was teaching him how to use some of the power tools. He also took Michael to the gun range and taught him gun safety.

He was a member of the Blue Knights motorcycle club and recently went to Key West with a few of them. Deputy York also enjoyed taking his wife for rides on his Harley.
