AMBER Alert for 2 NC Kids- Cops Say Biological Parents Took Them From Foster Home

An AMBER Alert has been issued in North Carolina for 2-year-old Paul Chambers and his 11-month-old sister, Breanna. The Watauga County Sheriff's office tells AMW.com that arrest warrants have been issued for the childrens' biological parents, 29 year old James Canter and 18 year old Alisha Chambers.

Police say the couple showed up at the foster home of Breanna and Paul, confronted their foster parents at gunpoint before taking the children on the run.

Alleged Meth Lab Was Kids' First Home

Eight months ago, Breanna and Paul had been put into foster care after a raid on their parents home. Police say James Canter and Alisha Chambers were running a meth lab, and the couple faced a list of various charges. Alisha Chambers was arrested on the spot, but James Canter was out the day police raided the home; they say they hadn't seen him since.

At some point after Alisha was released from custody, police believe the couple reunited and planned the abduction of their children. Police don't yet know how they tracked down the foster home.

A Wild Chase - The Suspects Get Away

Police say when James Canter and Alisha Chambers took off with Breanna and Paul, they began a wild ride that put the kids in even more danger. The foster family had called police, who issued an alert for the couple's Ford. But when an officer on a nearby highway saw the car, he says they refused to stop.

After finally hitting a guardrail, the Ford pulled over. As an officer approached the car, cops say the couple threw the car into reverse, nearly hitting him. They then took off again, but the car was in such bad shape that one of the wheels actually fell off. Nonetheless, the chase continued on three wheels until Canter and Chambers managed to pull off near some woods and ditch the car and make off on foot.

The officer was not able to get close enough to the car to see if Breannna and Paul were with the couple at that time. However, the children have not been found.

Police believe Chambers and Canter  have a network of friends and associates in the area and believe they have received some help in their escape.

Kids Recovered Safe and Sound, Parents Arrested

After a four day manhunt for a pair of kidnappers, North Carolina deputies have tracked the couple down in Grayson County, Virginia. On Wednesday, January 19, 2005, deputies arrested Alisha Chambers and James Canter. Watauga County Sheriff Mark Shook said, "We're glad this is over. The kids are safe and sound, that's the best part." Deputies received information that the couple was driving a black 2000 two-door Ford with Tennessee tags. The tipster said two other adults were in the car as well as the abducted kids, 11 month old Breanna Chambers and her two year old brother James. Deputies believed Chambers and Canter were heading towards Grayson County, Virginia or Knoxville, Tennessee. Acting quickly on the lead, deputies headed towards Virginia and Tennessee looking for the vehicle. With help from Virginia authorities, deputies found the black Ford on the side of the road in White Top, Virginia. Chambers and Canter were arrested, and the children, who are unharmed will be returned to North Carolina.
