For nearly 24 hours, authorities in Broward County, Fla. searched for what turned out to be a fictional couple. A woman had reported witnessing the couple commit an appalling act --
tossing an hours-old infant out of a moving car.
The woman, Patricia Pokriots, was hailed as a good Samaritan when she arrived at a nearby sheriff's office with the infant. However, her story began to show holes under questioning.
Deputies now say Pokriots is in fact the infant's biological mother.
And, they say the story about the unconscionable couple was complete fiction.
Deputies say Pokriots gave birth to the boy around 1:30 pm in the bathroom of her mother's house; she fabricated the story to cover up the birth and the fact that she didn't want the child.
Florida has a Safe Haven law -- mothers may anonymously drop a baby off at a hospital or fire station within the first three days of the child's birth. It's not clear why Pokriots didn't simply surrender the infant at a Safe Haven. While Deputies say Pokriot filed a false police report, it seems unlikely that they will charge her.
