Cops say 9-month-old Saniya Purcell's babysitter used her in scheme to win her ex-boyfriend's affections. After lying to him more than a year ago about a non-existent pregnancy, cops say she boarded a bus to his hometown of Opp, Ala. where the she was apprehended. Police say Saniya is safe.
On Thursday, May 28, 2009 at about 6:19 p.m., police in Opp, Ala. arrived at the apartment where Renesha Griner, the girl's 17-year-old babysitter, was staying.
According to police, Griner had told her ex-boyfriend more than a year before that she was pregnant with his child, and had been sending him pictures of Saniya to back up her lies.
Cops say he believed that the child was his, and he and his mother made preparations for Griner and the child to come and live with them in Alabama.
Saniya's mother needed to go out of town over Memorial Day weekend and police say Griner offered to watch the child. It would be the perfect opportunity to take the baby, cops say.
On Friday, May 22, 2009, cops say Griner picked Saniya up from her home.
Saniya's mother left town, believing her child was safe and in trusted company, but police say she didn't anticipate Griner's next move.
Cops say Griner hopped on a Greyhound bus, headed for Columbus, Ga. Eventually she made her way to Alabama, where her ex-boyfriend met her at the bus station.
He and his mother welcomed the child, and had prepared for Griner and the child to move to Alabama to live with them, Cpt. John Kivett of the Hoke County Sheriff's Office said.
When police showed up at the apartment, only Griner and her ex-boyfriend were there. Cops say Saniya was with the boyfriend's mother.
After admitting to taking the child, police took Griner into custody.
The ex-boyfriend's mother was contacted, and cops say they recovered the child when she brought Saniya to the police station a short time later.
Cops say Griner had no intention of returning the child, and has been charged with kidnapping.
