Kristi Leigh Cornwell

Remains Identified As Kristi Cornwell's

Eighteen months after Kristi Cornwell disappeared, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation says human remains found in Union County, Ga, are that of the missing woman. Cornwell's identity was confirmed by the agency's forensic pathologist through dental records. John Bankhead of the GBI says someone discovered the human skeletal remains in Union County on Jan. 1, 2011, near the North Carolina line, about nine miles northeast of the area along Jones Creek Road where Cornwell vanished.

She was taking a walk the night of Aug. 11, 2009, and talking on the phone with her boyfriend when he suddenly heard her scream, "Don't take me!"

Possible Suspect

In the weeks and months that followed, sheriff's deputies, GBI agents, and other law officers, along with volunteers, tried to search everywhere in Union County and beyond for the 38-year-old.

Cornwell's family set up a website, sold a home to raise money, offered a $50,000 reward. The identity of Cornwell's killer is still a mystery, though investigators have not ruled out James Scott Carringer as a possible suspect. Carringer, 42, shot and killed himself after a three-hour standoff with Atlanta police in April 2010.

He once lived in Young Harris, in North Georgia. Carringer was also suspected in other attacks -- a woman at Kennesaw State University in Cobb County, Ga., and a girl in Alabama.
