On Sept 23, 2008, Sergeant Patrick McDonald was conducting a vehicle investigation for the Philadelphia Police Department when he approached a passenger who was, unknown to him, wanted for assaulting a police officer. The passenger exited the vehicle and fled, followed closely by Sergeant McDonald. When the officer caught up a struggle ensued, which lead to the suspect pulling out a handgun and shooting Sergeant McDonald seven times, murdering him in the process.
Officer Richard Bowes was responding to the call for backup when he encountered the defendant running from the fallen officer. Officer Bowes chased the man and when he caught up to him the suspect once again pulled out his handgun and shot at Officer Bowes, striking him and shattering his pelvis. The gunman stood over his second victim as he attempted to reload his gun. Officer Bowes took advantage of this moment and was able to get off five shots killing the gunman. Officer Bowes was transported to Temple Hospital for his wound. He is currently out of work recovering from his injuries.
Officer Bowes has been a member of Philadelphia Police Department for 13 years and has been the recipient of both the Officer of the Year award in 2006 in addition to 15 Officer of the Month awards. He is currently assigned to the Highway Patrol division and is a trained narcotics expert, crime scene trained and major incident trained.
