"Barbie Bandits" Busted

In a case that gripped -- and amused -- the nation, two young girls who have been dubbed the "Barbie Bandits" entered a Bank of America branch inside a Kroger in Cobb County, Ga. on February 28th, 2007 and made off with an undisclosed amount of cash. A bank surveillance camera recorded the act and police took just two days to arrest the girls, along with an unexpected accomplice.

Police say the girls, Ashley Miller and Heather Johnson, both 19 - one blonde and one brunette - casually walked into the store branch bank wearing large, dark-colored designer sunglasses and tight jeans. They were all smiles when they slipped a note across the counter to teller and demanded money. The teller reportedly panicked while stuffing money into a sack. Meanwhile, the two girls giggled and smiled while they waited for the cash. After the bank employee handed them the money, they walked out of the store.

But it's not that simple. In fact, this wasn't a bank robbery at all: it was a theft. Cops say the bank teller, 22-year-old Benny Herman Allen III, was in on the con all along.

The two girls - who cops say are both 19 - giggled and smiled while they waited for the cash.

Teller Arrested On Outstanding Warrant

The robbery was immediately reported and police arrived at the scene. While questioning different tellers and witnesses, police were able to make one arrest - of the teller, Allen. Upon investigating the crime, they discovered that he was wanted on an outstanding warrant, but cops didn't suspect that he was a part of the scheme at the time.

The Cobb County Police Department have not said how much money was actually taken, but they are saying that it is a "considerable amount." The young, fashionably dressed girls did not appear to have a weapon with them when they robbed the bank. And, while witnesses saw them leaving the store, they were not recorded on the outside security cameras.

Because authorities say they conspired to steal the cash with a bank employee, they will not be charged with the much more serious crime of bank robbery.
