Olivia Newton-John's Companion Mysteriously Disappears

On June 30, 2005, Patrick Kim McDermott went on an overnight fishing trip along the California coast. While investigators say no one ever saw him get off the boat, when the vessel returned to shore, the 48-year-old was nowhere to be found.

But it was days before anyone reported him missing. Finally, on July 6, he failed to show up to a family event, causing loved ones to worry -- especially his girlfriend Olivia Newton-John. Ever since then, investigators have been rushing to answer countless questions in this case, including a major question -- if Patrick didn't make it back to shore, when did he get off the boat?

Investigators Look At Clues In The Case

On July 11, relatives started to search for Patrick and found his car in the parking lot at the San Pedro Marina. They say it was right where he had left it to go on the fishing trip.

Investigators have also learned that Patrick left some of his belongings on the boat, including an essential piece of his personal property -- his wallet. 

Right now, the Coast Guard is treating this as a missing person's case. But a manager at the boat's marina claims that some of the passengers saw Patrick get off the boat. Recently, the Coast Guard also said it is looking into the possibility that McDermott may have faked his disappearance. And as they consider the possibility, they have also learned that McDermott was facing financial and family troubles.

McDermott's Past Reveals Legal Trouble

Although McDermott had been dating Olivia Newton-John for nine years, he was previously married. A 1994 divorce document shows that he was required to pay $800 a month in child support for his 13-year-old son.

But just a few months ago, a court ordered him to submit his outstanding payments. While Coast Guard investigators continue to search for McDermott, Olivia Newton-John is also getting personally involved in the search for her companion. She hired a private investigator in hopes of uncovering the mystery behind Patrick's disappearance.
