Police have released photos of a red Jeep Grand Cherokee in connection with the disappearance of Michelle Gardner-Quinn - a University of Vermont student who disappeared in the early morning hours of October 7, 2006. Burlington, Vermont police say that they have located the Jeep and have searched it. However, they are hoping that someone will come forward and help them to locate the vehicle's whereabouts from early Saturday morning until Monday morning.
Additionally, police released surveillance photos that captured the last known movements of Michelle. Now officials are asking for clues as to who might have seen Michelle and a man walking together along Main Street in Burlington. The man in the photos is also the owner of the Jeep Grand Cherokee.
State and local police are also searching a house and construction site in the Hill Section of Burlington.
Police want to trace Brian Rooney's path. They are hoping that someone saw his red Jeep between the early morning hours of Saturday October 7 and Monday morning October 9.
Michelle, a 21-year-old senior at the University of Vermont, vanished in the early morning hours of Saturday, October 7, 2006. Michelle was last seen at around 2:34 AM on Main Street in Burlington, walking back to her dorm room. She was on her way back to campus after celebrating a friend's 21st birthday. But cops say she never made it.
Michelle's parents were in town for Parents Weekend and reported her missing the next day after she failed to show up for dinner. According to officials, there is no indication that Michelle left on her own free will.
The Burlington Police Department, UVM authorities, canine teams, the Vermont State Police, and the FBI are all searching for clues in the disappearance of Michelle. Investigators have been working around the clock following leads, but at this time no suspects have been identified. Family and friends are also helping out by handing out and posting flyers all over the area. Others are assisting law enforcement officials by helping search the area for any clues that might help find Michelle.
A jewelry store surveillance camera captured these images of Michelle and a man walking along Main Street shortly before she disappeared.
Michelle is 5 feet 8 inches tall, and approximately 135 pounds. She has a stud piercing in her nose and was last seen wearing a gray peacoat, green button-up cardigan sweater, a light blue t-shirt, and a black Puma purse with white straps.
Michelle's family, friends, and the enitre community want to see her come home safe. Hopefully the information that was gathered so far, along with law enforcement officials and the assisting public, will help crack the case and bring back Michelle.
Police believe that Rooney killed Michelle within two hours of meeting her in the early morning hours of October 7. Michelle's body was found by hikers at the Huntington Gorge in Richmond, Vermont on October 13.
According to an affidavit filed October 25 to support a charge of Aggravated Homicide, Rooney has repeatedly changed his story concerning Michelle's disappearance and death. Rooney told investigators that he was drunk on the night of October 7 and didn't remember what had happened. According to the affidavit, he later told police, "If I did it, I deserve to die."
Rooney has plead not guilty in Michelle's case. He has also plead not guilty to four other unrelated sexual assault charges uncovered during the investigation of Michelle's death.
Police: We Need Your Help
Police in Burlington, Vermont asked for the public's help during the homicide investigation of Michelle Gardner-Quinn. While the prime suspect, 36-year-old Brian Rooney, was in custody on unrelated sexual-assault charges, the police were still looking for clues to help them in their investigation.
Police said they needed help locating items Michelle had with her in the early morning hours of October 7, when she disappeared. In particular police were hoping to find a silver chandelier style earring, one black Converse All-Star low-top sneaker, a Kyocera KX414 cell phone, a black Puma Purse with white strapes and Michelle's UVM CatScratch card. If you come in contact with these items, police ask that you do not handle them in any way. Please contact Burlington police immediately.
Police also asked anyone who saw Rooney or his red Grand Jeep Cherokee between Saturday October 7 and Monday morning October 9 to come forward.
Police immediately named 36-year-old Brian Rooney a suspect in her disappearance and booked him -- but on charges unrelated to Michelle's disappearance. He was booked and held on charges of Sexual Assault and Lewd & Lascivious Conduct with a Child.
Michelle had borrowed Rooney's phone the Saturday night she disappeared after she became separated from her friends.
Police say that Rooney is the man seen with Michelle in surveillance video around 2:34 am Saturday October 7.
